The Belts
Students of Ernie Reyes' Martial Arts show their progress in the art by the color of the belt they wear. Each color belt is a step towards the goal of Black Belt. The progression towards Black Belt goes as follows: White, Orange, Gold, Green, Purple, Blue, Blue I, Brown, Brown I, Red, Red I, Red/Black, and then Black Belt. If for some reason you miss a belt exam, please contact us as soon as possible.
Stripe System
The 5 to 8 stripes on the belts stand for a certain level of proficiency in a subject of the curriculum. The instructor awards the stripes in class when the student demonstrates knowledge of a group of techniques. The white stripes signify that the instructor has introduced/taught the material to the student. The black stripes signify that the student is ready to test. Each student must have all black stripes to attend the test. After you have received all your stripes, and have fulfilled your minimum number of classes, and have your instructor's approval, you will be scheduled to test at the next available exam for your next belt color! There is also one color stripe on your belt. This represents the month you will test. Here's a hint: Whatever color the newsletter is printed on signifies the color stripe testing that month! See attached for the color code chart.
Exams
To apply for an exam you must have all your black stripes, the minimum number of classes completed, and approval from your instructor. Belt Exams are (usually) held on the last Friday of each month. Occasionally, these exams may be preempted due to special events or holidays,
and notices will be posted for the new schedule. Exam times are listed in the monthly newsletter. Applications must be turned in one week before the test to avoid a late fee and all tuition must be up to date. Your uniform should be cleaned and pressed, and you must have a West Coast
patch and membership card. If you are under 18, you will need to turn in a Parent/Teachers Approval Form before you receive your new belt. Once you pass your test, you will be awarded your new belt.
Parent/ Teachers Approval Form
One of our main objectives is to develop well-rounded students, not only in martial arts but in life. Before students are awarded their new belt, they must be doing well in school and at home, and have approval from their teachers and parents to receive their new belt. Download Testing Forms |
